Obituary
ESTHER MARIE SCOTT
Esther “Marie” Scott was born on December 12, 1939, in Roanoke, Randolph County, Alabama. She is the second child of the late Lois Yancey Terry and Charlie B. Terry. The young family moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1940. Marie committed to Christ early in her childhood and joined the family’s home Church – Shiloh Community Missionary Baptist Church. There she began her calling to teach Sunday School and developed a passion for teaching.
She graduated from Peabody High School and immediately began training to become a Dental Hygienist. She later followed her brother, James Charles Terry, to New York City, where she continued her career in dentistry, working at the 5th Avenue private office for many years. This was until she was hired at Columbia University’s Dental School as an administrative assistant. She met her husband Eugene W. Scott in NYC and had one daughter, Teri. Her knowledge of dentistry gained her the opportunity to become an administrator, and after 15 years of service, she retired and moved to Oviedo, Florida.
Marie took many college courses during her tenure at Columbia University and decided to matriculate at the University of Central Florida. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and decided to become a Substitute Teacher for the Seminole County School Board, which she enjoyed and taught for many years. She was a member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church and served by singing in the choir, volunteering for various programs and eventually becoming a Golden Saints member.
Marie loved to read, write letters and cards to her loved ones. Whether friends overseas or family who had a birthday or other reason to celebrate, she’d send a note of love. She also loved engaging in long conversations (marathons) covering everything from education to politics, music, or any current event. She loved her family and going to events like birthdays and family reunions.
On Sunday, October 1, 2023, God sent his angels to gently close her eyes and take her to her heavenly home. Marie was preceded in death by her father: Charlie B. Terry, mother: Lois Yancey Terry, and husband: Eugene W. Scott.
Her memory is cherished by a daughter: Teri (Treves) Sims-Scott (Atlanta, Georgia); brother: Charles James Terry, (Alice), Coatesville, Pennsylvania; brothers-in-law: Frank (Butch) Kahan, Jr. (Gwen), Accokeek, Maryland; Vernell Kahan (Denise), Suffolk, Virginia; Connell Kahan (Karen), Chesapeake, Virginia; Reginald Kahan (Cecilia), Suffolk, Virginia; Godchildren: Eddie Darlington, Jr., Tanya Darlington, Lavar Davis, and Rapier Davis and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other living relatives, as well as her church family and friends.
She found comfort in moving so far away from family by creating a new family and a second home through close friendships made at Antioch. Especially dear to her were Mrs. Ida and the late Mr. Russell Boston, Mrs. Willie Pearl Hamilton, who was like a second Mom, her (Lil Sis) Maureen Sutton, Angela Adams, Eunice Mann, General Smith (Smitty), Aaron and Patricia Bythwood, Ministers Mack and Dawn Fernander, Deacon and Deaconess Moore, Pastor Charles and Mrs. Jones, and so many more who showed Christ-like compassion and care.
